[TUTORIAL] How to build an SMS DVD

Code:
TOC
A) Purpose
B) Software
C) Other Stuff
D) Procedure for SMS compatible DVD
E) Procedure for PS2 compatible disc (MCLoader method)
A) purpose:

Quote:
Note: SMS is not sega master system, but Simple Media System....THE media player for PS2...if you weren't sure about this, please recheck the noob's first stop.

If you were sure and now are wondering why I would put such a note in a tutorial, consider this original post:
Quote:
What is SMS? (sega master system?)

I don't get it.
This guide shows how to make a DVD which can contain

- video files for SMS
- any other (PS2 compatible and non) file for stuff like emulators

that, when inserted into the PS2, WILL NOT result in an "illegal disc" or "invalid" disc message, even on machined THAT ARE NOT MODDED!!

B) Software:

- Nero Vision
- Nero Burning Rom
- PowerIso (or anything else that edits/saves ISOs)
- CDGenPS2 3.0

C) Other stuff:

- DVD burner
- Blanks,
- An avi (similar) file long a bunch of seconds
- Prepare a folder with the stuff you want to put on DVD

D) Procedure for SMS compatible DVD
---------PART 1: NERO------------
1. Open up nero vision, choose " makeDVD=>DVD VIDEO"

2. Drag&Drop your small AVI file into the left window.
Make sure the file is really max around 1MB, or Nero will take more time to recode it.

3. Click next.
If you get the following message, just hit OK...don''t worry about what it tells you...

or else, you'll directly see:

4. Again click next, you'll get to:

5. click next again,
but this time there's a bit of more work for you:

In the left window, choose " Burn to=>ImageRecorder"

6. Click " burn" , choose where to save the image,
give it a name then wait for everything to complete.

7. You'll get this message after Nero has finished:

Do what you want...

8. In the location you have chosen before,
you should see your newly created nrg

---------PART 2: PowerIso------------

1. Right-click your nrg file, choose " open with=> PowerIso"

2. PowerIso will start.

3. Drag&drop the folder with the files you previously prepared into the right window.

4. Hit the SAVE button.

5. Hit Burn button, OR ELSE:

---------PART 3: Back to Nero------------

1. Again. right-click your nrg file, choose " open with=> Nero Burning Rom"

2. This will pop up:

3. Just Hit Burn and wait for everything to complete.

DONE!!!

---------------TIPS------------

- you can use mini dvds (8cm)- don't use the v-stand then!....to be honest I never tried on full size dvds, lol
- once you've made a " basic nrg" , you can always use it as a template
- you may put as many foders/subfolders onto the disc as you please, but keep in mind that you MAY NOT ERASE the video_ts folder

E) Procedure for PS2 compatible disc

Note: You'll need a loader with CDX support, like MCLoader 1.35
1. Open the template with PowerIso like shown above.

(or make a simple ISO with a dummy and your stuff in it)

2. Again, drag and drop your files in, like shown above

3. Hit save

4. Launch CDGENPS2,
click " advanced=> create a CDx file from ISO"

5. Select your ISO

6. Give the new file a name

7. In the folder where you have your template iso, you will find 2 new files: cue and cdx.

8. Right-click the cue, open with Nero, burn on CD

---------------TEMPLATES-------------

I've added a template to this tutorial. If you use it, you can skip " part 1" ...

I used a 5 seconds avi of a beautiful guitar recorded by me...enjoy,

Re: [TUTORIAL] How to build a SMS/ULE compatible DVD

Nice tutorial, I take it this works on the basis that the ps2 will accept dvd videos as valid even if they are burned?

Surely there must be an easier/more automated way to do this...
/me ponders that possibility

As for resizing images, I generally use Ifranview, it has the ability to batch convert files(I mostly use it since to capture screens from my ps2, it goes to bitmaps, and I usually want jpegs.) Tons of nifty features when you convert as well, resize(including the option to keep the ratio the same).

Oh, on a side note, does the data on the disk need to be larger then a certain size? I guess I'm basically asking if it needs any dummy files?

I hope so...Once I upload the template (I forgot yesterday) it will be almost "automated", lol

I know, I'm an IrfanView fan, too :p

No.

I even made one with a 200KB avi of catherine zeta jones (yummy, btw) as the "dvd video" part and a dded a folder with a 2mb the simpsons clip...worked just fine, no bigger dummy needed.

Editing done...anything wrong?

Re: [TUTORIAL] How to build a SMS/ULE compatible DVD

Yes, the PS2 will recognize it, but:

No, you cannot just use the ps2's built in browser to view your clips, or you will just see the "DVD Video" icon, or the dvd will just start along with the PS2 DVD player (you'll see the "trick-clip" you put on it, but not the other files you've burnt. You'll see that of the guitar if you use my template, for example)

BTW, bison, you could put your emulators and roms on such a disc and start everyting with ule and MCLoader....

Re: [TUTORIAL] How to build an SMS/ULE compatible DVD

I was using HDAdvance to try to install HDL after i ran the PSX exploit installer. I restarted the PS2 i got to the screen where you have to copy the Boot.elf and the HDL0.8bIPS.ELF files onto the hard drive.

Basicly the USB thumb drive i have is incompatible. I tried formatting it to both fat and fat32 without success. It would freeze any time i tried to access the mass: in the exploit. I tried to burn a dvd with the HDL0.8bIPS.ELF and Boot.elf files in a folder seperate from the video_ts folder on the root directory of the image. Im using the TemplateMcB.nrg as the image im burining from which was attached to this post. I cant seem to find any way to access the information on the disc in the exploit.

I figured it would be under cdfs: but if i accessed the PSX cd before i swapped to the burned DVD it would only list the files from the PSX cd. I then restarted the ps2 and then after the explot loaded from the memory card i immedatly swaped the disc to the burned disc witht he files i wanted to copy on it.

When i navigate to cdfs: it showed nothing in the directory. I am possitive that i burned the DVD correctly as used TemplateMcB.nrg attached in this thread and put the files i wanted to create in a folder and then copied the folder into a on the root of the image and then burned the image after saving it with poweriso.

Am i doing something wrong here? Is there no way to copy files off of a dvd in the explot that is copied to the memory card after launching the iso in HDA copied to PS2 HD or am i not choosing the right directory or not selecting the correct options.

This was my last resort as the memory stick failed and i could browse to the ps2 HD over the network via ftp but couldnt copy any files to or from the PS2 HD. I suspect that the reason was due to some read or write permissions that i need to set somewhere. I didnt see any way to set that up in the UI that was provided to me with the exploit.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG! Arg. This is so frustrating. Thanks to whoever stuck with my post and read it all the way through. Perhaps someone can provide some insight here.

Edit

MY BAD.
template must be converted to CDx or umcdr and burnt on CD. You'll have to use something like MCLoader (v 1.35, cdx support) to access the disc.Adding to tut with pictures. I wanted to check it first as I have no cds...I still have no, so I'm not sure that template works . I'll get some cd blanks and try, sorry.

That's all to complicated...the MCLoader method is thought for running an elf that then accesses a cdx...

All you want to do is update the exploit, then just take this,
put it on hdd with winhiip,
set mode 3,
launch it with HDA
hit x
select uLaunchElf

with this version you'll almost certainly be able to access your USB stick...

Nope

EDIT

I updated the tut...sorry again

Re: [TUTORIAL] How to build an SMS DVD

I have tried to burn the uLe4.12 CD, but keep getting the invalid disk on my PS2. This looks like the right track, but I want to make sure I have this straight.

If I want to make a uLe bootable disk for my unmodded PS2, all I have to to is add the BOOT.ELF and config file from the uLe4.12 ISO to your template NRG and then follow your CDGEN and burn instructions under section E, right?

This will create a CD that the PS2 will recognize and load uLe? All I want to do is copy some saves to a memory card. If I can't do it without buying a mod or SwapMagic, then I might as well just buy and Action Replay or CodeBreaker. I've already put too much into trying to figure this out. Am I wasting my time?

Re: [TUTORIAL] How to build an SMS DVD

Welcome new member

no mate, you got that wrong.

That's not the type of cd that is discussed here

The type of media my template is for, is meant to be readable using supplementary progs, like e.g. SMS.

IT IS BY NO MEANS a media, which will simply be booted by the PS2 like an original pressed disc!

For directly booting a homebrew cd WITH AN APPLICATION ON IT (like uLe) as if it were an original, you'd still need a chip/swap magic.

That's not what this tut is for.

Yeah, you might aswell get ARmax and a usb pen, sou (given that youhave a fat ps2) you can install the exploit.
